Bank of Good Health by Kevin Raison

To your health

Now when you have a surname like Raison being seen eating nuts at school was not something I really thought about, believe me I had enough teasing when they bought out that ‘everyone’s a fruit and nut cake’ advert. Do you remember that one?

Anyway, I’m much older now and know that nuts are too good to be avoided even if I do still get the odd laugh now and then. In fact, if you haven’t got any in your cupboards or anywhere in your house then, shame on you. Go and get some right now….hold on, read the rest of the article and see what’s best for you first.

So without further ado, let me introduce to you my Bank of Good Health ™ which started as a way for my clients to help remember some of the great ways to stay on top of your nutritional benefits. As my clients found it so easy to remember and add in to their everyday diet, it soon became very popular among their friends and families.

So why the Bank of Good Health?

Well, I’ve chosen some of the best nuts, seeds and oils combined to make an all round improvement to your health in days and it’s so easy to remember. I’ve called it the HSBC diet, Hemp seeds, Sesame seeds, Brazil nuts and Coconut oil.

Now although you may be thinking that all of these ingredients are high in fat (and you’ll be right in thinking that) and you’re already having doubts about whether this is the right dietary advice for you. Well I’d like you to reserve your judgement as I banish some of the brainwashing myths that have been stored in your mind (probably since Rosemary Conley donned her first pair of leggings) and open your mind to the power possibility and promise of what I’m about to share with you.

Now this is going to shock you and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if you didn’t believe me but contrary to what you have been told not all fats are bad.

There are many many good fats. Many are beyond good , they are vital. A good example of these are monounsaturated fats which help towards energy production and prevent heart disease and polyunsaturated fats which help towards brain function and prevention of Disease.

Ok, so I haven’t exactly rocked the boat there but what would you think if I told you…..

Saturated fat isn’t such a BAD fat!

Now that’s more of a statement and a very true one at that, as long as we get our fats from quality meats, coconut and dairy.

Saturated fat (used for energy production) has actually hit an all time low as far as nutritional benefits is concerned according to most nutritionists and dieticians yet one of the most highly saturated fats out there (coconut) is on my Bank of Good Health™.

In fact, the only fats we should really be avoiding are Trans Fatty Acids that are vegetable oils hardened into margarines. These tend to have a more plasticy substance that the body does not recognise and therefore is more likely to clog arteries.

Here’s a brief outlook at the benefits of the Bank of Good Health™ and some guidelines to keep you on track.

Account is Open

Hemp seeds are packed with the perfect ratio of omega 3 & 6’s at a ratio of 1:1. With most of the population consuming a ratio closer to 1:20, hemp seed should play a big part in our diet.

The humble hemp also contains amino acids (building blocks of protein) that are essential to our body. In other words, our body cant actually produce these proteins that we need for optimum health so we need to find a food source that has this perfect ratio, again the HEMP IS KING. Also a great source of zinc, calcium, iron and vitamin A, the mighty hemp really is the top seed (pun intended).

For those concerned, hemp seeds have no intoxicating effect.

Sesame seeds help to protect the body from free radicals. They are a key source of phytic acid, (Phytic acid could inhibit cancer, specifically of the colon) magnesium and calcium but, also have a good source of Iron, phosphorous, vitamin B1 and zinc. Now the real unique quality about the sesame seed is their contents of sesamin (protects the liver from oxidative damage) and sesamolin which provide a very beneficial fibre called lignan which have been shown to lower cholesterol.

Brazil nuts have an incredible selenium content which has been proven to increase cancer resistance. In fact, even the supplement selenium didn’t prove anymore powerful than the nuts themselves. So if you want the anti-cancer properties and a great source of selenium, then add a small handful of nuts to your list of foods. Just make sure you choose the nuts without the chocolate coatings.

Coconuts and coconut oil often receive really bad press due to them being not only a satu- rated fat but one of the highest saturates around! So you’ll probably think me mad that I’m advising you to make it your new cooking oil. Let me explain, coconut oil is actually lower in calories than any other fat and can actually stimulate your metabolism, help you lose weight, boost your immune system and give you immediate energy, just like that! At only 6.8 calories per gram of fat (most fat contains 9 calories per gram of fat) this fat has a high content of Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA) that are broken down immediately and used as fuel.

That’s it!

So there you have it, a quick and easy way to remember a selection of foods that should be part of our daily diet. The great thing is all of these can be used as a snack to carry around with you.

And remember, you don't have to have them all in one go, although I would recommend a daily dose of hemp seeds or sesame seeds to enrich your calcium levels in the morning. Then maybe a small handful of brazil nuts as a snack mid afternoon to increase energy levels before the afternoon slump.

Coconut oil should always be your preferred cooking oil as it will not turn rancid when heated at high temperatures and ideally you should own only one other liquid oil and that’s extra virgin olive oil but do not use this for cooking…..just salads.
